Johnny Law SKY RANGER

As Steve and Corky started off on their teg-
ular patrol the sky was overcast with a
smoke haze from a forest fire raging a hun-
dred miles northwest from the air police
base*

"The wind has shifted again/' Corky com-
mented thoughtfully, "That means the boys
fighting that fire are going to have a tough
time keeping it under control/'

"I think we'll make our north-west run the
first leg of our patrol today,.. just in case
things get out of hand and they need some
outside help. Tune in on the short-wave and
tee if you can find out how they ore mak-
ing out up there/' replied Steve, as he lev-
eled off the 'copter and checked his course.

As they flew toward the range of moun-
tains reports kept coming in on the short-
wave. The firefighters had the fire confined
to a limited area, but the shift of wind was
fanning the flames on one flank and it
threatened to break out of control and
sweep up a narrow valley where it would
then threaten hundreds of forest acres. A
small group of volunteers were in the valley
trying to hack down enough trees to moke
a fire break but time was against them.

"They'll never finish it in time/' predicted
Steve. Hardly had he spoken when the of-
ficer from conservation headquarters con-
tacted the unit in the valley over their walkie*
talkie.

"Evacuate all personnel at once/' came
the order from Conservation headquarters.
"Hurry because Unit Three reports the fire
is sweeping around the left flank and you'll
be trapped in a pocket if you don't move
fast,"

"Fighting a forest fire's a heartbreaking
job/' said Corky; scowling. "You hack, and
chop and dig until your hands are raw with
blisters, then just as you think you've got the
fire in hand, the wind changes and all the
work you did is wasted!"

They flew along in silence for about a half
hour and then an excited voice cut In on the
short wave. "This is Kelly of Unit Four, I've
just -gotten my men out of that valley and
the whole area is pocketed off by a cross
fire . . . but on checking I find two of my men
*,. Ardsley and Peters are missing! They are
still back there and I can't get back to rescue
them!"

Quickly Steve barked orders to Corky.
"Tell 'em we'll fly in by 'copter and try to
get them out if they'll guide us in as close
as they can!"

The acrid fumes of smoke penetrated the
cabin. It was like flying in a dense fog. Cau-
tiously Steve descended as they swung into
the valley. It was a tricky business to fty low
enough to be able to catch an occasional
glimpse of the ground and still not risk crack-
ing up on a treetop, Steve flicked on the
spotlight but it could not penetrate the
smoke, "Throw out a few flares/' he said to
Corky.

As the flares dropped Steve caught a
glimpse of a clearing, and he descended. At
fifteen feet he finally was able to see well
enough to land.

"What if they collapsed from the smoke?"
asked Corky, as he climbed down. ^How
are we going to find them?"

Almost as if in reply they heard a gun-

&RWW1Y low Sr£Y

Aot off to #te left. Without wasting any
time they headed toward the sound. As they
stumbled through the tangle of thorns and
branches they called to the missing men, but
got no reply-

'If they are there why don't they answer?"-
asked Steve anxiously.

"Dunno but we'll soon find out... I hope/ 1
responded Corky peering ahead into the
smoky haze, *l just wish they'd fire another
shot to guide us.''

After another fen feet they came to a
small clearing and what they saw made
them stop short In their tracks. The two men
they were searching for were up a tree, star-
ing with terror at a wild cat that was work- N
ing her way along the limb of another tree
that overhung the one they were on. Her
yellow eyes gleamed balefully and her tail
twitched ominously. Even as they watched,
she t*med to spring.

Steve whipped* out his revolver and fired
thre# shots in rapid succession. The wild cat
leaped, but tumbled in mid-air and crashed
to the ground. Her body writhed briefly,
then twitched and was still.

The two men scrambled down from the
tree. "Whew, ore we ever glad you came
dlong just then! She's had us treed for over
an hour, and we'd used our last bullet try*
tno to kill her." ! '&

"If was a lucky last bullet. If we hadn't
heard that shot we'd never have known
where to look for you! said Steve. 'How did
she happen to corner you, anyhow? Most
animals trapped tn a forest fire forget about
everything else but escaping."

"That's the reason/' said one of the men
pointing toward two baby wild cars who
had come from behind a rock where they'd
been hiding and now pressed up against
the limp body. "We found the babies, and
figured she'd abandoned them so we took
them along figuring we r d save them from
being trapped by the fire. Only we* guessed
wrong. Sh^ <ame back and found us with
her babies. We dropped the kits and tried
to get away, but she was so crazed by the
fire she came after us. We shot twice and
. missed and then climbed a tree. We figured
she'd forget us and go, but no such luck.
Instead she started after us.*We shot again

artd nicked her . . . that left us with one bullet.

i

RANGCR

Then she got real wnart and climbed above
us in that other tree. 1 used my last bullet
trying to hit her and missed. We heard you
call but by then we didn't dare answer for
fear she'd spring on us!"

He glanced down at the two whimpering
balls of fur. "Poor little fellas, they're or-
phans now. . . but none of them had a chance
of escaping even if we'd left them alone."
You're right," answered Corky. "The
only escape from here is up. And even that
won't be safe if we don't get moving. Let's
get back to the 'copter before this whole
place bursts into flames!"

"We'll take these two extra passengers
along with us," said Steve, scooping up the
baby wild cats. 'Want to take charge of
them?"

"Sure/'answered the rescued men. "Well
turn them over to the Conservation Depart-
ment. They keep a small 200 at the State
Park."

, As they climbed into the Whirly bird,
Steve wasted no time. The engine coughed,
sputtered and took hold, and they rose
straight up through the murky smoke. As
they gained .altitude Corky peered down
below ond saw a blast of flame break out
below*as the whole clearing was enveloped
in fire.

In the cabin the baby wild cats whim-
pered and mewed. Corky opened the emer-
gency kit and fished out a can of evapo-
rated milk and a can opener and handed
them to the fire fighters. They grinned with
approval and got busy with the can opener
as Corky switched on the short wave.

"Air Police Patrol reporting . . . Mission
successful ... we are flying out with four
survivors . . . all safe and uninjured . . J'

A startled reply came back over the re-
ceiver... "FOUR???? But there were only two
men missing... Ardsley and Peters! Our rec-
ords show, . ."

Grinning Corky cut in, "Correct! Ardsley
and Peters, and two four legged survivors
...a couple of. orphaned baby wild cats."

Steve and Corky exchanged grins as they
waited a reply. The cabin was quiet except
for the sound of two small tongues hap-
pily lapping up evaporated milk from the
cupped hands of Ardsley and Peters.
